Main Street Design is delighted to announce the completion of our memorial trail at the Dorothy Hamm Middle School in Arlington, Virginia. In conjunction with its renovation and expansion, the former Stratford Junior High School – originally named for Robert E. Lee’s plantation – was renamed to honor a local civil rights activist. The memorial celebrates the courage and confidence of four young Black students who entered the school on the morning of February 2, 1959, making this the first desegregated public school in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
