Houston Arboretum & Nature Center
Houston, Texas

Between 2008 and 2012 Houston’s Memorial Park lost nearly 60% of its mature tree canopy to hurricane and drought. In response, the Arboretum resolved to pursue the development of “resilient ecologies,” a mix of woodlands, wetlands, savannas, and prairies that more authentically represents the historic regional ecological context. In conjunction with this ambitious and far-sighted effort, Main Street created guest experiences for a new education complex, and for “field stations” located along paths and trails. Interpretation focuses on the restoration project itself, offering ongoing observation, documentation, and engagement with the Arboretum’s living ecological experiment and showcasing the fact that humans can play a positive role in the natural world.
